Judge dismisses charges against Michigan hair stylists who defied Gov. Gretchen Whitmer coronavirus orders

Attorneys representing the Attorney General’s Office were a no-show.
State police issued the women misdemeanor citations for disorderly conduct as they participated in a demonstration organized by the Michigan Conservative Coalition and dubbed Operation Haircut.
The protest in support of Karl Manke, an Owosso barber who continued operating despite efforts by state officials to shut his barber shop down, featured barbers and stylists offering free haircuts in defiance of Whitmer’s executive orders aimed at slowing the spread of COVID-19. The emergency orders closed barbershops, salons and other businesses and were later deemed unconstitutional by the state Supreme Court.

Simmons dismissed all criminal charges filed by the Michigan Attorney General’s office against six hairstylists who participated in Operation Haircut. These six women dared to violate Gov. Whitmer’s coronavirus emergency orders during a protest at the state Capitol last May.
These six hairstylists were represented by the Kallman Legal Group. The following is from a Press Release given to me by their Attorney David Kallman his legal group stated: Operation Haircut Protest on May 20, 2020, in support of Owosso barber Karl Manke, who was also present at the protest. Approximately 20 hair stylists were cutting hair at the Capitol that day, yet only seven were criminally prosecuted. Kallman Legal Group represented six of the protestors. Bowling alley owners across Michigan are sounding the alarm over how much longer their businesses can survive on-again, off-again pandemic restrictions that ban indoor dining and limit who can bowl.
The restrictions, set by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services since March, are confusing and may result in more bowling alleys going up for sale or out of business entirely, say owners.
In Berkley, Hartfield Lanes, which has operated in the city s downtown for more than 60 years, for example, is now on the market.
“We just don’t know what’s going to happen. We’ve been shut down eight of 11 months, and I’m going into my personal savings to keep the business going,” said Jeff Hartfield Jr., whose grandfather started the bar-turned-bowling alley in the 1940s.
