Mets News: Joey Lucchesi will start tonight's game

Photo by Quinn Harris/Getty Images With Jacob deGrom pitching tomorrow on an extra day of rest, the Mets were in need of a fifth starter for tonight’s game. The team has announced via their game notes that Joey Lucchesi has been recalled to take the hill tonight against the Cardinals. To make room for Lucchesi on the active roster, Daniel Zamora has been optioned. Zamora was recalled by the Mets on Friday and did not appear in any games during his brief tenure on the roster. Lucchesi has appeared in three games so far this season two as a starter and one as a reliever pitching to a 6.75 ERA in eight innings of work. He has struck out eleven hitters and walked two over that span. Although Lucchesi can be dangerous when his signature “churve” is working, it is likely that the Mets will not get depth out of him tonight and that the likes of Sean Reid-Foley and Robert Gsellman will have to do some heavy lifting in relief.

Mets Morning News for May 4, 2021

Zack Scott spoke about the decision to make the change. In the closing moment of last night’s game, the lights went out in a bizarre scene. Jacob deGrom was named National League Pitcher of the Month. The ace will look to continue his red-hot start tonight. A bad trifecta of issues is plaguing Lindor. Despite his struggles, Luis Rojas has no plans to drop Lindor in the order. Prior to the game, Lucchesi was called up to make the start, with Daniel Zamora getting optioned to the minors. The Mets also released catcher Caleb Joseph. J.D. Davis was placed on the injured list, retroactive to Sunday, and Trevor Hildenberger was recalled from the Alternate Training Site to take his place.

Mets Release Caleb Joseph

MLB Trade Rumors The Mets released Caleb Joseph from his split contract with the team, MLBTR has learned.  The move took place last week.  Joseph signed with New York in February and was a late cut at the end of Spring Training camp. A veteran of seven big league seasons, Joseph is best known for his time as a backup and part-time catcher with the Orioles from 2014-18.  He also appeared in 20 games with the Diamondbacks in 2019 and three games back in the AL East with the Blue Jays last season.  Joseph has hit .222/.270/.351 with 32 home runs over 1367 career plate appearances in the majors, but is better known for his defense, particularly his pitch-framing and his ability to throw out baserunners.
