Victoria Thomas remembers the snow and how the heavy flakes came down, falling on the body of her dead son, Marc Neal, as police investigated the Feb. 3, 2020, shooting in her front yard. She remembers investigators digging around for officers’ shell casings.
Neal, 56, was a loving son, Thomas said, but he struggled with mental illness. She said that illness led to the confrontation with officers and she blames it for his death.
She also remains upset at the officers who fired at him.
In 2020, at least 40% of people Utah police shot at were experiencing a mental health event, according to a Salt Lake Tribune database that tracks police shootings. This data point was gleaned from news reports, and includes cases where police determined or family members reported that a person had a mental health issue, mental disability or was suicidal.
[Highlights] Black Bears Win Season-Opener at UNH in Shootout
The University of Maine Black Bears began the 2020-21 season with a 2-1 shootout victory at New Hampshire on Friday night.
Returning to the ice for the first time since mid-March, Maine was able to grab two points in a game that doubled as the season-opener, but also a countable Hockey East conference game.
UNH controlled the majority of the game and had more than twice as many shots on goal (38 compared to Maine s 16) in the contest.
The game s goals were separated by just 32 seconds in the third period. UNH broke the scoreless tie through Kalle Erickson s goal at 12:42 of the 3rd period. That effort was quickly equalized by Maine, as Lynden Breen - a freshman making his debut for the Black Bears - finished off a sublime move. The goal was assisted by the skillful passing of Adam Dawe and Eduards Tralmaks.
