Migrants Awaiting Processing Fill Two Border Town Hotels, While California Foots the Bill

Migrants Awaiting Processing Fill Two Border Town Hotels, While California Foots the Bill On 4/28/21 at 4:49 PM EDT Migrants continue to seek refuge at the southern border, and Imperial County, California, positioned across from the Mexican border city of Mexicali, has felt the effects. Two of the area s hotels, the Ramada by Wyndham Hotel in Holtville and Travelodge by Wyndham El Centro, currently house migrants awaiting processing, with each hotel at full capacity. While El Centro s Mayor Cheryl Viegas-Walker told the Calexico Chronicle she does not care who stays in local hotels, she and other Imperial Valley officials do care what happens with funds gathered from the transient occupancy tax, known as the bed tax, an 8 to 10% increment added to the total cost of renting a room for less than 30 days.

Opinion: I thought I would have more time, but I didn't. My tata is another victim of the pandemic.

Thirteen minutes and 49 seconds. That is the length of the only audio recording I have on my phone of my great-grandfather’s voice, from two years ago, and I had been meaning for quite a while to make it back to the tiny condo on the country club outside of Holtville my Nana and Tata lived in and interview them again. I’m not sure why, but I just always thought I would have more time. First, it was “I’ll make sure to go see them after I graduate.” Then, “once I get settled into my new job.” And finally, “once COVID is over.”

Under Biden, it's a new era for writing about climate change

Print This is the Jan. 21, 2021, edition of Boiling Point, a weekly newsletter about climate change and the environment in California and the American West. Sign up here to get it in your inbox. The last story I wrote before Donald Trump was elected president, four years and two months ago, was about the Obama administration’s claim that it had approved 60 renewable energy projects on public lands, capable of powering up to 5 million homes. I scrutinized those numbers, finding they dramatically overestimated the outgoing president’s accomplishments. When Trump defeated Hillary Clinton a few days after the story published, I started to wonder if I had wasted my time.

Mis Ángeles: 'Navidad Sin Ti'

December 22, 2020 7:00 AM (Photo illustration by Chava Sanchez LAist) In a fit of nostalgia, I found myself scrolling through social media recently, trying to find covers of Navidad Sin Ti , a classic Spanish Christmas-themed ode to lost love. As a kid, the original song performed by iconic Mexican grupo Los Bukis, was such a part of Christmas that I sometimes felt like I could see frontman Marco Antonio Solís himself floating through the halls of my Tia Ramona s in a crisp white suit, casually devastating us with his perfect pitch and melancholy lyrics about being lonely on Christmas and remembering the day that I lost you.
