On Nov. 18, when BMG’s emerging jazz and classical imprint, Modern Recordings, announced it had signed jazz legend Pat Metheny to a recording contract, it became the the guitarist and composer’s first new label home in over 20 years.
Metheny’s signing was the biggest yet for Modern Recordings, which was established in November 2019 under the leadership of senior vp Christian Kellersman, who served in the classical and jazz department at Universal Music in Germany for over 13 years. Now, the label is gearing up for Metheny’s first release under the deal,
Road to the Sun, out March 5. The album will feature two new compositions by Metheny, performed by guitarist Jason Vieaux and the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet.

Behold the Banjo Guzheng Pickin’ Girls, as goes the title of one the many joyous collaborations here, bringing together diverse traditional music from China’s marginalised communities and the clawhammer banjo style that began in west Africa before being claimed by the American south. In many tracks – such as the gorgeous Water Is Wide/Wusuli Boat Song, a weaving-together of a Scottish ballad with a Hezhe traditional – this record is a constant celebration of how music can help us explore common ground, and freshly discover it together.
