Cleveland-Cliffs forecasts $3.5 billion in EBITDA this year

Cleveland-Cliffs, one of the Calumet Region s largest industrial employers, forecasts it will pull in about $3.5 billion in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization this year if prices hold up. The Cleveland-based steelmaker, which bought ArcelorMittal USA and AK Steel last year, projects it will bring in $500 million in EBITDA in the first quarter and $1.2 billion in EBITDA in the second quarter of 2021. The projections assume hot-rolled coil prices in the United States will continue to average $975 per ton for the rest of the year. Cleveland-Cliffs plans to report its first-quarter earnings on April 22. Last year, the steelmaker pulled in $353 million in EBITDA but posted a loss of $81 million because of $186 million in costs related to acquisition, severance and inventory step-up. It posted a strong fourth quarter in which it completed its acquisition of ArcelorMittal USA, pulling in a profit of $74 million on $286 million in EBITDA.

Fossil fuel dependence poses potential threat to Region steel mills

Purdue University Northwest s Center for Visualization and Simulation recently secured a $7 million federal grant for research that could make blast furnaces up to 10% more energy efficient, lessening their carbon footprint. The very future of the integrated steel mills along the lakeshore in Northwest Indiana may depend on such technological advancement. For more than a century, coke — a purified form of coal — has been burned in blazing blast furnaces in the hulking steel mills in the Calumet Region to forge the iron that s turned into the steel that goes into cars, appliances, buildings and bridges. But fossil fuels have been falling out of favor and are facing increased regulation across the globe, as political leaders look to grapple with the threat of climate change.

In wake of coronavirus pandemic, state of workforce in NWI is 'not great'

More than one out of every five Northwest Indiana residents lost their jobs during the coronavirus pandemic — and many were out of work for a protracted period. While the unemployment rate in the Calumet Region has since descended from the stratosphere, the viral outbreak is expected to have a longer-lasting impact on the workforce and job market in the Calumet Region. The state of the workforce in Northwest Indiana is not great and might be best summarized as trying desperately to hold on and get through the economic challenges stemming from the pandemic, Indiana University Northwest Assistant Professor of Economics Micah Pollak said. The unemployment rate in Northwest Indiana, while much lower than earlier in the pandemic, continues to be 2.5 percentage points or 60% higher than one year previous. Unemployment insurance claims are still at record levels. The labor market is tight, and finding a replacement job can be extremely difficult or impossible for a worker poten
