Carlsbad Mayor: Rain welcome in city. Few incidents reported
Dale Janway
Thursday’s rain was very welcome. Our monitor at the airport reported 1.8 inches of rain, while individuals in north and central Carlsbad reported receiving more than 2.2 inches. A flood advisory was in effect for a portion of Thursday evening, with some requests for barricades near James Street. The chance of rain dropped Friday morning and there did not appear to be any significant issues in the morning. We hope to see more rain.

Announcements for the 109 scholarships were made on the Foundation’s Web site at www.carlsbadfoundation.org. The scholarship award process began in January with a series of virtual meetings. The application process was open between Feb. 1 and Feb. 21.

We offer our condolences to the family of Verna Stell, who passed away on Feb. 5. Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday. Verna’s husband, State Representative Joe Stell, passed away in October. Together, Verna and Joe worked very hard for Carlsbad and the entire state for many years on numerous conservation and water issues. Joe was elected as a state representative of District 54 in 1986 and was named “Mr. Water” by former governor Bill Richardson. Verna was also one of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet, and she was extremely dedicated to charitable causes and making the world a better place. Anyone wishing to make a donation in her memory may do so to the Joe & Verna Stell Charitable Fund within the Carlsbad Community Foundation Inc. or online at www.carlsbadfoundation.org.
Monday, Jan. 18 will be the birthday for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King’s message of putting aside our differences and working together, and of peacefully pushing for positive change, has never been more important than it is today.
Carlsbad has a wonderful organization called the MLK Jr. Scholarship Committee. For decades, the Committee has celebrated Dr. King’s birthday with three days of activities. They’ve had a fundraiser steak banquet on Saturday evening, a church service on Sunday, and a march on Monday, followed by a short ceremony at Carlsbad’s MLK Park. Last year, local attorney Nate Banks talked about his father’s participation in Dr. King’s marches at Saturday’s dinner. Sunday’s church services always draw singers from around town, who practice together for the weeks leading up to the event. The march, which begins on the courthouse lawn, has always one of the best events of the weekend. Last year, we enjoyed getting to listen to Dr. Joy James-Foste
