ELKINS Newly elected Mayor Jerry Marco has created a new task force to deal with drug addiction and homelessness in the City of Elkins.
The Addiction and Homeless Resources Task Force will include one Elkins City Council member, Elkins Police Chief Travis Bennett and Randolph County Sheriff Rob Elbon. The Task Force will also include at least four citizen members.
Marco said Task Force members will “seek and share information about available strategies and resources, as well as identifying and advocating for needed new resources” in the areas of “addiction and homelessness prevention and response,” according to a city press release, which also states, “This body will also look for opportunities to reduce duplication of efforts.”

Applause to the Elkins Fire Department for their quick work in putting out a fatal fire in just over an hour Wednesday morning. Two individuals died in the fire in a River Street house that had been declared uninhabitable. The West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the incident.
Applause to the 43 years of service to the City of Elkins put in by Carman Metheny, the longtime Elkins City Councilman, who will take part in his last meeting as a current council member this Thursday. Metheny served on city council the past 16 years. Before that he worked for the City of Elkins for 28 years. We salute Metheny for his dedication to the city, and for his openness and honesty in his dealings with the public and the press.
ELKINS Elkins City Council has certified the results of the March 2 Elkins Municipal Election.
Meeting Wednesday, council certified the vote totals, which were unchanged from the results of Monday’s vote canvass at the Phil Gainer Community Center.
During Monday’s vote canvass, council reviewed 32 provisional ballots and accepted 22 of them, changing some vote totals but not the outcomes of any races.
Candidates had 48 hours from the close of the canvass to request recounts, but none did, enabling council to certify as final the declared vote tallies in all five city wards.
The new mayor and the five city council members elected will be sworn in March 31 and take office April 1.
