Elizabethton celebrates Independence Day in Downtown on Saturday


ELIZABETHTON — The patriotic citizens of Carter County turned out in large numbers in downtown Elizabethton to celebrate Independence Day on Saturday. The largest crowds gathered at the Covered Bridge Park for the Independence Day Celebration put on by the Elizabethton Parks and Recreation Department, but there were also people attending the Bonnie Kate Theatre for one of the four presentations of the Jonesborough Repertory Theatre’s “1940s USO Show,” and also the weekly cruise-in hosted by the Carter County Car Club.
The celebration culminated with a 20-minute fireworks show fired from a new location this year, the Elk Avenue Bridge. Prior to that, the large audience at the Covered Bridge Park was treated to a free concert by theSpank, the ultimate ’80s party band. ....

William Spencer Pickel


JOHNSON CITY -William Spencer Pickel, 91, Johnson City, passed away Tuesday, April 6 at his home surrounded by his family and his fur buddies, Pepper, Honey, and Karlie.
He was born on April 22, 1929 in Johnson City. He operated a Sinclair Service Station on Walnut Street for many years until 1972. At that time he opened his own car repair shop and later retired as a mechanic from the Tennessee Department of Transportation. He loved people and always found opportunities to demonstrate his strong faith. He restored several antique vehicles and enjoyed flying and also attained his private pilot license.
He was a charter member of Princeton Presbyterian Church where he served as decan and elder for many years and later served as elder and Sunday School teacher at Keystone Presbyterian Church. He currently attended Shenandoah Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class at First Methodist Church in Johnson City. He also served over forty years on ....

Elizabethton City Council approves several downtown events for spring


ELIZABETHTON — After a year of pandemic, with many of Elizabethton’s most beloved annual events canceled to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in 2020, the Elizabethton City Council is showing faith that 2021 will be a more normal year.
The council unanimously approved several events that are likely to draw a large crowd. These include some of the longtime favorites, like the weekly downtown cruise-in. Others are first-time events, like the Music and Miles Half Marathon. One popular event which has yet to be approved for this year is the city’s biggest festival, Covered Bridge Days, which may have to go later than normal because of renovations on the Elk Avenue Bridge. ....
