LOOKING back on his subsequent progress up the Irish, and indeed world, athletics ladder, it is hard to believe that John Cronin was not elected in his first attempt to get involved at committee level in the Tullamore Harriers. The Tullamore resident will be elected unopposed as president of Athletics Ireland at Congress on Saturday and he hopes serve the permitted two terms of two years each.
A fine 800 metre runner in his youth, Cronin took up running in his native Donegal, winning the national U-16 800 metre title in 1976. He continued his athletics career in UCG in the late 1970s and competed in Tullamore in the Quinlan Cup while a member there.
Passing of a Limerick Hurling Great

The death has taken place of former Limerick hurling star, Jack Quaid.
Jack, along with his twin brother Jim, was a vital part of the fine Shannonside team of the mid 1950 s.
From the Feohanagh - Castlemahon club, both starred as London were overcome in the 1954 All Ireland junior decider.
Promotion to the senior side followed and the twins were heavily involved as Limerick surprised Clare in the 1955 Munster decider. Jack lined out at left half back with Jim in the middle of the field.
This team were labelled the Mackey Greyhounds after their legendary trainer Mick Mackey. Clare had surprised reigning All Ireland kingpins, Cork, in the opening round and were warm favourites.
