Then the linebacker was quickly thrust into a much larger role.
When senior starter and team captain Joe Bachie was declared ineligible after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance in October 2019, Harvey moved into the starting lineup for the final five games.
“That 2019 season kind of let me understand what a college football game’s really like because I was playing special teams years before that and I had never really got many reps as a linebacker,” Harvey said. “That brief half of the season that I got to start it did help me because when I walked into the 2020 season I knew what to expect.”

Ben VanSumeren is switching sides in the battle for the Paul Bunyan Trophy.
The Michigan redshirt sophomore linebacker who entered the transfer portal on Feb. 12 announced his commitment to Michigan State on Saturday. That’s a position of need for the Spartans, who are thin on linebacker depth.
VanSumeren, an Essexville Garber High School graduate, has three seasons of eligibility remaining and won’t officially become a Spartan until he enrolls. His younger brother, Alex VanSumeren, is a 2022 four-star defensive tackle at Essexville Garber who decommitted from Michigan on Feb. 11 and Michigan State is among the schools recruiting him.
