CANAAN Residents rejected a proposed zoning ordinance that would dictate what types of buildings are allowed in the Canaan Historic District along part of Canaan Street in Town Meeting voting on Tuesday. The measure, which was backed by the Planning Board and opposed by the Selectboard, was defeated 327-204.
Dan Collins, with 244 votes, defeated Selectboard member Al Posnanski (208) along with Ami Gammell (51) and Derek Herro (30) in a four-way race for a three-year term.
Voters approved a $4.13 million municipal budget on a 376-167 vote.
A $1.2 million bond to upgrade the town’s water system, which includes water main replacements from Canaan Street Lake to the water treatment plant, also sailed through, 442-95.

Hot topic: Voters will be asked to approve a zoning ordinance that would dictate what types of buildings are allowed in the Canaan Historic District along part of Canaan Street, as well as regulate signs and set height requirements. The article was proposed by the Planning Board and the Selectboard has come out against it.
Budget: The proposed budget is $4.13 million, about $91,000 higher than last year’s approved general fund budget. According to the town report, taxes are expected to rise 1% because revenue from 2020 was higher than expected and the tax base grew by 1%.

Strengthen protections for Canaan Historic District
Kudos to Chairman John Bergeron and the Canaan Planning Board for developing a proposed zoning ordinance, as recommended by the town attorney, that would further strengthen the existing protections the Canaan Historic District enjoys (“Planning board mulls creating historic district,” Jan. 9).
The district is one of the undisputed jewels of the Upper Valley; the graceful old homes, sweeping westerly views and proximity to Canaan Street Lake warrant particular protection in a town where no zoning, for some, is a strange point of pride. Zoning is one way to help protect property values and attract business, but I digress.
