Classical music performances scheduled for rural audiences

PORTLAND — A series of classical music performances is scheduled for state parks and other outdoor arenas this summer as In A Landscape: Classical Music in the Wild travels the Pacific Northwest. The concert tour features a nine-foot Steinway grand piano on a flatbed trailer, and music is transmitted to concert-goers via wireless headphones. Participants can wander the landscape to enjoy the natural settings including state parks, urban greenspaces, working ranches, farms and historical sites while enjoying the performance. Guest artists during past tours have included poets, visual artists, dancers, and musicians playing everything from banjos to pianos. Local performances of classical music will be offered at Wallowa Lake State Park in Joseph, the Cant Ranch at the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument near Dayville, and Cottonwood Canyon State Park near Wasco. Other performances will be held in Eugene, Central Oregon, the Oregon Coast and more, with additional sites to be

Oregon's remote campgrounds got busier in 2020, while popular destinations grew quieter

Oregon’s remote campgrounds got busier in 2020, while popular destinations grew quieter By Jamie Hale, oregonlive.com Share: 2 Photos People gather on the boat dock at Unity Lake State Recreation Area in Eastern Oregon. Photo Gallery Oregon’s most popular campgrounds were a little less full than usual last summer, while some remote state park sites saw a huge surge in campers. That’s according to data released Monday by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, which tracks the number of “camper nights” (each night spent by each camper at a campsite) at all state park campgrounds each year. The numbers from 2020 show a massive decline in camping statewide, falling 34% from more than 2.9 million camper nights in 2019 to just over 1.9 million last year.

Oregon's remote campgrounds got busier in 2020, while popular destinations grew quieter | Coronavirus

SALEM — Oregon’s most popular campgrounds were a little less full than usual last summer, while some remote state park sites saw a huge surge in campers. That’s according to data released on Monday, Feb. 8, by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, which tracks the number of “camper nights” (each night spent by each camper at a campsite) at all state park campgrounds each year. The numbers from 2020 show a massive decline in camping statewide, falling 34% from more than 2.9 million camper nights in 2019 to just over 1.9 million last year. It’s no surprise that the numbers would fall in 2020. The hectic year saw all campgrounds closed between March and June due to the coronavirus pandemic, with most cabins and yurts closed through December. Wildfires in September also made some campgrounds inaccessible, while smoke made camping unhealthy across the state. Some campgrounds were badly damaged or even destroyed by the fires.
