Amarillo ISD introduces Ready, Set, Vamanos!

For many parents one of the biggest milepost for transitioning out of the toddler phase with their little ones is the day that they first set foot in school for Pre-K or Kindergarten. There s a lot of excitement and wonder abound at that age. And the folks at Amarillo ISD are working to simplify and demystify the of troublesome process of student enrollment while still adding a little bit of fun along the way with their new Ready, Set, Vamanos! Initiative. Dejan Ristovski What the district hopes to do with Ready, Set, Vamanos! is to provide an outreach for parents of children who are age four (or will be by September 21st) and are not yet enrolled in a district school. The program offers a variety of age appropriate activities for children, including scavenger hunts and a chance to explore participating campuses. Parents will also have the opportunity to ask questions and seek assistance in enrollment.

Three of the four school buildings are more than 100 years old and all of them need extensive repairs, district officials said. Renovations could cost about $10 million per school, but the district does not have the funding to cover that, according to KYW Newsradio.  The district is running a $40 million budget deficit that will continue each year if not addressed, school officials said. The district s debt could get as high as $400 million in the next decade. The impacted students will be sent to other district schools with higher-quality and newer facilities. Transportation will be guaranteed. These decisions are painful for you, they re painful for families, they re painful for the school community, they re painful for me, but there is a necessary pain that is needed that is temporary, Superintendent Katrina McCombs said.
