Our view: COVID protests are out of place

It’s the last place you’d expect to see one of those “my body, my choice” protests reneging against the life-saving COVID vaccines. But there they were, on Cloverdale Avenue near Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center on Saturday, about 45 people protesting the medical center’s decision to require its employees to be fully vaccinated. Some claimed to be employees of the medical center, the Journal’s John Hinton reported. Their arguments were presented concisely on placards: “Stop the Mandate,” “No Covid Vax Mandates,” and “Jab or Job — Where Are Our Rights?” You wouldn’t think it would be much of an ask for educated, experienced medical professionals, many of whom, we would assume, have seen the ravages of COVID up close. And, indeed, Wake Forest Baptist officials say that 75% of its workforce — more than 19,000 employees — has already been fully vaccinated.

Triad hospitals ranked 7th, 8th and 16th in North Carolina in U S News & World Report listing

The magazine released its hospital rankings for 2021-22 early Tuesday. The 2021-22 report reviewed about 4,750 hospitals nationwide in 15 specialties — the primary focus of the report — along with 17 procedures and conditions. Only 175 hospitals nationwide out of about 4,750 were ranked in at least one national top-50 specialty, while about 1,500 received at least one high-performance category ranking. US News defines a high-performance specialty ranking as being outside the top-50 nationally, but “was significantly better than average.” Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center achieved a high-performance ranking in neurology and neurosurgery, while Cone Health was ranked in gastroenterology and GI surgery, and urology. Forsyth Medical Center did not receive a high-performance specialty ranking.

Triad healthcare systems set mandate requiring fully vaccinated employees

The Triad’s three major health-care systems said Thursday they will require all employees to be fully vaccinated as part of a statewide public-health initiative. Cone Health will be the first to put the mandate into place for its workforce, setting a July 30 deadline. Novant Health Inc. will require full vaccination of employees by Sept. 15, while Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and parent company Atrium Health have set an Oct. 31 deadline. WATCH NOW: Gov. Roy Cooper talks about the next steps in the current State of Emergency for North Carolina There will be some exceptions for medical and religious reasons, the systems said.

Martin Faced with an arena-sized public-relations gaffe, Forsyth County officials quickly decided Thursday to postpone action on plans to build a 50,000-square-foot event center at Tanglewood Park. People who live in Clemmons West near the park are complaining that they knew nothing of the event center plans until reading about it in Monday’s Journal, and say an event center that close to their homes will disrupt their lives and spoil their use of the park. “It will be very obtrusive and very detrimental to the peace and tranquility we enjoy,” said Robyn Williams, who lives on Maidstone Lane near Tanglewood. “There is someone from my family walking, biking or running there every single day. I don’t go there to walk around a building. I go there to walk around the trees.”
