As a young child, Bonnie Nang picked, hauled, and sold for scrap huge bags of rubbish, cans and plastic bottles, for an income for her family.
Now, as a testament to the power of education and books, she works as a doctor, in the same village in which she grew up.
Dr Nang, from Cambodia, was helped by Edukid, one of a dozen organisations to receive an award from the BMA Information Fund in its twentieth year.
Hawaii declares state of emergency after heavy floods overwhelm roads and bridges
The Governor of Hawaii, David Ige, declared a state of emergency Tuesday after torrential rains prompted evacuations, damaged homes, and almost caused a dam failure. The severe weather is expected to continue until Friday, when the state will release general funds to help those affected by the storms. The order covers Hawaii, Maui, Kalawao and Kauai counties, as well as the city and county of Honolulu.
The town of Haleiwa on the island of Oahu’s North Shore was evacuated due to “catastrophic flooding,” however, this order was rescinded seven hours later while road closures were kept in place.

(Reuters) – Heavy rains breached a dam on the Hawaiian island of Maui, causing floods that damaged homes and bridges, while spurring authorities to open evacuation shelters after ordering everyone to leave the vicinity.
The rains led to the cresting of the Kaupakalua dam in the island’s northern region of Haiku, state emergency management officials said in a statement.
“Failure of the dam will produce life-threatening flooding as well as significant property damage in areas downstream,” weather officials in Honolulu, the state capital, said in a statement.
