Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said he wants to give each full-time city employee a one-time $5K payment.
In a letter to city workers, Woodfin said he wanted to show his gratitude for employees and “their continued service during this pandemic.” Part-time employees with the city will receive a one-time payment of $2,500.
The mayor said he plans to present this recommendation for the “premium payment” to the City Council on June 1 and the Jefferson County Personnel Board on June 8.
Woodfin said the COVID-19 pandemic created a “difficult, trying year that tested families in unimaginable ways.”
He said workers “worked through unforeseen obstacles, constantly adjusted and adapted, and maintained the high level of service that our community expects.”

The City of Birminghamâs mask ordinance officially expired on Monday and city officials have shown no interest in extending it.
City Councilor Hunter Williams, who has consistently opposed the ordinance, calling it âgovernment overreachâ, said expiration of the ordinance is the right thing.
âI think the fact that the CDC, state health officer and county health officer are all not recommending the masks, I think it is appropriate to not have the city recommending it when the three medical experts are not recommending it,â he said.
Since more than 120 million people in the Unites States have received the COVID-19 vaccines, the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions (CDC) announced last week that face coverings were no longer necessary for those who are vaccinated. Eight states have lifted their mask mandates since the announcement, but cities can impose their own mandates.

Birminghamâs mayor and police chief; Jefferson Countyâs Sheriff and DA and the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama on Friday announced a partnership to stem gun violence in Birmingham and across Jefferson County.
The alliance comes in a month that has seen an uptick in gun violence including one week that left at least seven dead and more than 10 wounded.Â
âThis constitutes a unique law enforcement partnership that I believe is necessary to tackle gun violence,â said Mayor Randall Woodfin, during a virtual press conference from downtown Birmingham Police headquarters. âTogether, we are committed to a coordination that will further . . . our common goal, an all hands on deck effort to reduce gun violence.â
