Huntington Beach to lift COVID-19 local emergency

Print The city of Huntington Beach will be ending its COVID-19 local emergency, after the Huntington Beach City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to direct city staff to prepare the necessary paperwork. Huntington Beach will join neighboring Newport Beach, which voted to lift its local emergency on June 22. In Surf City, the local emergency has been in place since March 16, 2020 at the outset of the coronavirus pandemic. The California economy was largely fully reopened on June 15 by Gov. Gavin Newsom and Huntington Beach is coming off a Fourth of July weekend that saw thousands flock to Pier Plaza for a festival and fireworks show on Sunday night.

Additionally, the city will officially recognize June as LGBTQ Pride month. The agenda item submitted by Mayor Kim Carr and Councilman Dan Kalmick passed 6-0, with Councilman Erik Peterson absent from the meeting. Carr, who has spoken often about making Surf City a city of inclusion since she was appointed mayor last December, said she had received many emails in support of the measure. The flag will be raised at City Hall on May 22 each year Harvey Milk Day and stay up through the end of June.

Tito Ortiz Has Worn Out His Welcome as HB Mayor Pro Tem

Former UFC light heavyweight champ Tito Ortiz won a seat on the Huntington Beach City Council in November with the most votes in city history, and was unanimously appointed Mayor Pro Tem by his fellow members this month, but thanks to his anti-mask antics plus his scant attendance at meetings the Council is moving to oust him from the pro tem position, the Mayor Kim Carr, Councilman Mike Posey, and Councilman Dan Kalmick will introduce an agenda item at next Monday’s meeting accusing Ortiz, 46, of showing “little commitment to serving in the role with honor and dignity.” The proposal which calls for a vote of no confidence in Ortiz, his removal as Mayor Pro Tem, and finding his replacement continues, “His unprofessional demeanor and poor judgement [sic] have raised concerns among residents, local business owners, and his fellow council members.”
