BREAKING: Former DA Estevez arrested Written by Geoffrey Plant on June 4, 2021
Francesca Estevez, former district attorney for the state’s Sixth Judicial District, was arrested just after 10 Friday morning and charged with driving while intoxicated. Grant County Sheriff’s deputies made the arrest in the vicinity of mile marker 108 on U.S. 180, about 40 minutes after a 911 caller reported a reckless driver.
Less than 20 minutes after she was taken into custody, a former Silver City Police Department officer alerted the Daily Press newsroom that Estevez had been arrested.
“Deputies made contact and determined there was probable cause to stop the vehicle,” Grant County Sheriff Frank Gomez said. “After making contact, they did field sobriety tests and, based on the clues, arrested her.”

More than 800 fill out U.S. 180 survey Written by Dean Thompson on February 22, 2021
The New Mexico Department of Transportation is conducting an engineering and environmental study for roadway improvements to a 38-mile section of U.S. 180 between Bayard and Deming.
The DOT held a public survey about the roadway earlier this year, and is in the process of scheduling a virtual public meeting that has been tentatively set for the first week in March.
The state is also updating a webpage for the project that should be available as early as this week, according to Arthur J. Romero, DOT project manager.
