Despite the easing of restrictions, only an estimated 12% of restaurants and fewer than 40% of pubs are currently open
The hospitality industry is calling on the government to make landlords write off half of the rent debt accrued by businesses while closed in lockdown.
UKHospitality CEO Kate Nicholls has written to communities secretary Robert Jenrick calling for the government to mandate “the sharing of pain”.
Hospitality has been hit harder in the pandemic than any other sector, Nicholls argues, leaving many businesses unsustainable under current debt levels.
”A binding adjudication should set out minimum rent writedowns, and for businesses that were forced to close we believe this must be set at 50%,” said the letter, dated 4 May.
The minimum loan is £25,001 and the maximum loan is £1m.

Steve Griffiths, sales and product director at The Mortgage Lender, said: “Now more than ever lenders need to have criteria that caters for a wide range of customer circumstances and recognise that the last 12 months has been financially difficult for many people.
“Our Lumi range, which is available through specialist distributors, takes a pragmatic approach to the real-world experience many of our broker partners are presented with when they are sourcing a mortgage for their clients.
Numerous county court judgments (CCJs) have been made against Slater and Gordon, RollOnFriday can reveal.
Since 2015, the firm has been subject to at least six CCJs.
The most recent judgment, for £1,100, was handed down on 22 September last year and is shown on the register as still unsatisfied five months later. A spokesperson for Slater and Gordon said the record hasn t been updated and was incorrect , and insisted that we don’t have any outstanding CCJs .
Staff at both the Registry Trust, which operates the public register of CCJs, and at the County Court Money Claims Centre which dealt with the claim, were unable to confirm Slater and Gordon s assertion. However, they agreed it was possible that the debt had been settled and was not yet showing up on court records.
