Paige Fournier, a special education teacher at Freeport Middle School, has had a good year in spite of the pandemic’s impact.
“We’ve had more positive than negative,” said Fournier, a 17-year educator.
She came to know her students better, she said, as she worked with them early on to navigate remote learning from home. The staff was brought closer as they dealt with technology challenges, she said. And last week, Fournier accepted the Cumberland County Teacher of the Year award at a virtual ceremony.

Eleven public school teachers in northeast North Dakota have been selected as County Teachers of the Year from among 110 educators who were nominated for the honor, according to Kirsten Baesler, state school superintendent.
Of the 110 nominees, 81 teachers completed applications to be considered. The applications were screened by an eight-member committee that included education group representatives and a former Teacher of the Year.

More than 150 teachers and staff members from several Tulsa County school districts are scheduled to get the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. All of those getting the vaccine are 65 and older and nursing staff, according to the Tulsa Health Department.
A spokesperson for the Tulsa Health Department confirmed the teachers and staff members getting the vaccine are from the Owasso, Collinsville, Sperry and Skiatook school districts. This also includes eligible people from Rejoice Christian School in Owasso.
The health department said eligible candidates did not have to make an appointment and were notified of how to proceed through their respective employers. Nearly 750 other people will also be vaccinated at the same location in Owasso; the health department said these appointments were made through the state’s online portal.
