Fish deaths in Otago remain a mystery after new report inconclusive

Hamish McNeilly/Stuff A new report has found no strong evidence to link the Otago Regional Council s opening of a coastal mouth to fish deaths. The report, released on Wednesday by the council, was independently written by Ryder Environmental. The new report made a series of considerations for the council to undertake in future coastal mouth openings, which is done as a common flood mitigation measure. The measures include monitoring of water temperature and coinciding openings with rainfall and tides. Otago Regional Council s general manager for operations, Gavin Palmer, said the council would take the suggestions for minimising environmental risk on board.

Independent Reports Recommend Considerations Following Kaikorai Fish Deaths

Wednesday, 17 March 2021, 5:15 pm The Otago Regional Council (ORC) has received two independent reports into fish deaths in the lower Kaikorai Lagoon, which followed the mechanical opening of the coastal mouth by ORC contractors as a flood mitigation. ORC commissioned the two reports because of its dual role as operator and regulator, in order to keep those powers separate: one on the cause of the fish deaths for the engineering team by Ryder Environmental, and one by Wynn Williams reviewing the compliance investigation. Both reports are supplied. Engineering review The independent expert review by Ryder Environmental could not establish a factual cause and effect relationship associated
