Pollack, Bala: Gift unlocks growth for Cornell Bowers CIS

Jason Koski/Cornell University Cornell President Martha E. Pollack, left, and Kavita Bala, dean of Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science, speak via Zoom during the annual Cornell Silicon Valley event. Pollack, Bala: Gift ‘unlocks growth’ for Cornell Bowers CIS April 7, 2021 More than half of Cornell undergraduates now take at least one course in Cornell Bowers CIS. The university’s computing and information science fields have seen a sixfold growth in enrollment over the past decade. And increasingly, the technology realm is offering tremendous opportunities, as it impacts every aspect of human life. Plans for a new building for Cornell Bowers CIS – made possible by Bowers’ landmark gift – will help meet that rising demand.

2020 in review: COVID-19 was the story | Cornell Chronicle

2020 in review: COVID-19 was the story December 21, 2020 The first mention of the word “coronavirus” in a Cornell Chronicle story in 2020 came on Jan. 29, when the university designated mainland China as an elevated-risk destination, and imposed travel restrictions on students, faculty and staff. Since then, there have been more than 300 stories or university statements that mention COVID-19 posted on news.cornell.edu. It has been the story of the year. The most-read Chronicle story of the year was a Weill Cornell Medicine-produced research FAQ from April 20, “Why is COVID-19 mild for some, deadly for others?” Given the fact that so much remains unknown about this mysterious virus, it’s no surprise that more than 60,000 readers – and counting – clicked on this story.

Gift from Ann S Bowers 59 creates new college of computing and information science

Gift from Ann S. Bowers ’59 creates new college of computing and information science December 17, 2020 A transformative gift from Ann S. Bowers ’59 – a Silicon Valley champion and longtime philanthropist – will establish the Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science, supporting Cornell’s preeminence in these fields. Her nine-figure commitment will provide the enabling support for the construction of a new building for the Faculty of Computing and Information Science (CIS). The building will accommodate sorely needed growth in CIS, where half of all Cornell undergraduates take at least one class and enrollment is increasing at a pace unmatched anywhere at the university. It will also ultimately provide significant endowment support for faculty and students in CIS.
