Lumber prices are on the rise across the country, and those soaring costs hit the Helena area in the middle of a housing boom. New constructionâboth residential and commercialâis not an unusual site around the city.
For area builders, high demand plus high costs have created challenges.
âItâs definitely a challenge that we have to navigate through, and itâs different every day,â Golden Eagle Construction president Adam Senechal said. âIt feels like every project can be different.â
At the heart of the issue lie materials. Lumber shortages are driving prices up (link to Andyâs story), and pushing out delivery dates. Even basic necessities like I-joists for flooring, oriented strand board and plywood are hard to come by.

Dean Martin talked about how the community has supported his family s Sunnyway Foods for 65 years.
McCauley was shopping at Sunnyway in December when Martin, a G-A graduate, asked him about the status of the project. McCauley recalled he said didn t know because GAEF did not want to ask the community for money during a pandemic, then Dean said, I wanna get it built and the Martin family became the second major sponsor. There s a lot of bad news, we need some good news. Thank you for allowing us to be part of this, Martin said at the ceremony.
Martin, who now also is on the GAEF board, reached out to Greg Weaver at Antrim Way Honda.

In selecting locations for their new corporate offices, an area homebuilder and a local staffing firm both ended up taking a less-traditional route: converting decades-old retail spaces into their respective headquarters.
Eagle Construction of VA, previously based at West Broad Village, has opened a new HQ in the Canterbury Shopping Center at Patterson Avenue and Pump Road, where it’s relocated its offices and home design gallery.
Across the river, a retail strip in front of the Chalkley Place shopping center at Iron Bridge and Chalkley roads is now the home base of Elite Force Staffing, which moved from a location on Chester Road after completing a $1.1 million overhaul of its new space.
