DEP approves massive Keystone Sanitary Landfill expansion

DEP approves Keystone Landfill expansion in Lackawanna County

Updated: 4:49 PM EDT June 3, 2021 DUNMORE, Pa. The Keystone Landfill made the expansion request back in 2014 and seven years later it s a done deal. The expansion is not the addition of more property. DEP says the landfill can expand vertically by filling the valleys in between current waste mounds. DEP says Keystone can fill 435 acres of existing permitted property. A spokesperson with the landfill says they will be able to dispose of 94 million tons of waste. This has been a controversial issue here since 2014. Newswatch 16 spoke with Dunmore s mayor Tim Burke who was disappointed with the decision. Senator Bob Casey issued a statement saying DEP s decision is contrary to the best interests of the people.

Australia Releases National Plastics Plan Friday, May 14, 2021 The Australian Government has released a plan to reduce plastic waste. Currently, 2.5 million metric tons of plastic waste is generated in Australia each year, with 13% of that recovered. The Plan notes that Australia is taking responsibility for its plastic waste and that, under the Recycling and Waste Reduction Act of 2020, the export of unsorted mixed plastics is banned as of July 2021.  Additional measures include a phase-out of non-compostable plastic packaging containing additive fragmentable technology that does not meet relevant compostable standards by July 2022, and of polyvinyl chloride packaging labels and expanded polystyrene in consumer food and beverage containers by December 2022.
