Training camp next to Paul Brown Stadium continued on Thursday for the Cincinnati Bengals. Before the team’s second practice this week, we got to hear from a few more star players in their first in-person press conferences since 2019.
Jessie Bates III doesn’t
have to be practicing right now. He could decide to preserve his body until his agent and the team come to terms on a contract extension. The 24-year old Bates is expected to be made one of the highest paid safeties in the game sometime before the beginning of the regular season. He may even reset the safety market altogether.
Who should be the Bengals’ 3 players to build around?
One is obvious. Like, really obvious.

But what about the other two guys to build this team around?
While many will say All-Pro Jessie Bates is an easy choice, safeties don’t have the same value in today’s NFL as positions like wide receiver, offensive tackle, or defensive end. An argument could be made for left tackle Jonah Williams to be one of the three given how important he is to keeping Burrow upright, though injury concerns make Williams a hard player to call a cornerstone piece right now.

The Bengals were 4-11-1 in 2020, after fighting through injuries that saw 10 regular contributors end the season on Reserve/Injured. The most notable of those injuries was rookie QB Joe Burrow, the team s No. 1 overall selection in the 2020 draft who saw his season end after 10 games due to a knee injury. Despite the lack of an NFL offseason program to ease the rookie learning curve, Taylor helped steer Burrow to one of the top statistical starts to a career by a QB in NFL history. Burrow missed nearly half of his 10th game, but his 264 completions still count as the most ever by an NFL QB through their first 10 career games, while his 404 pass attempts are second in the same category and his 2688 passing yards are fifth.
