Photos at the start of 2020 mirrored previous years: crowded ClubFests, student activism, Ithaca weather and hockey games. But as a raging pandemic canceled events and closed campus, the photos depicted a shift in daily routines and customs that defined an unforgettable year.
Here’s a look at 2020 often called historic, unprecedented and one like no other in photos.

News item: Starting sometime this month or next, more than a billion cicadas will emerge, after 17 years underground, in a dozen U.S. states up and down the eastern seaboard. This group of cicadas, known as Brood X, is among the largest populations of all 17-year periodical cicadas.
The sun rose high in Collegetown on a balmy April-in-Ithaca day. Undergraduates loitered outside the new Collegetown Bagels while a miracle of nature unfolded under a patch of grass near the College Avenue Bridge. The soil having warmed to precisely 64 degrees Fahrenheit was the signal for a Brood X periodical cicada named Cecily to begin burrowing up to the surface. She came out with a pop, squinting in the first sunshine sheâd seen in 17 years. The sudden emergence of an insect from the soil attracted the notice of a passing little black ant named Anthony, who stopped to observe. They stared at each other for a moment, and then Cecily began to look around.
The Student Agencies Building, which will have 64 apartment units, is expected to open in August. There is currently up to 2,000 square feet of commercial space available in the basement. Founded by Cornell alumnus Dan Mitchell, the Ithaca Beer Company has established itself as a wildly successful locally-grown brand with a strong following among both the student and local community populations, Student Agencies CEO Kyle Karnes said in a news release.
Plans are still being developed for the satellite location, according to the release. A few of the details that are final include the availability of lunch and dinner options featuring farm fresh produce and beers brewed at Ithaca Beer s production facility.

After employees at Collegetown Bagels and Ithaca Bakery circulated a petition early last week demanding better COVID-19 safety measures, the companyâs management agreed to meet their demands Monday morning.
In the petition, signed by more than 1,250 people as of Monday evening, employees asked that the company close all indoor dining until a vaccine becomes widely available, construct more physical barriers between employees and customers and implement more specific sanitation procedures. Employees also demanded that the company provide at least $2 in hazard pay per hour and institute a clearer protocol in the event that an employee tests positive for COVID-19.
