Sherman Associates has broken ground on a 10-story 222-unit apartment building next door to Thrivent Financial s downtown Minneapolis headquarters.
Thrivent sold the land to Sherman s Moment Minneapolis unit earlier this month for $3 million, according to the Minnesota Department of Revenue s electronic real estate listing.
Sherman broke ground Wednesday on the $80 million project, at the corner of 7th Street S. and Portland Avenue.
Designed by ESG Architects, the apartment building s first floor will house a day care center. The second floor will be leased by Firefighters for Healing, a transitional recovery center for burn victims and their families. The rest of the building will become apartment units.

A small army of contractors raced into Thrivent’s new Minneapolis headquarters Tuesday to finish the floating staircase, insulate walls, install a run of whiteboards and hang hundreds of art pieces in time to welcome 900 employees back to the office by January.
The company, a nonprofit financial services organization with more than $152 billion in assets under management, said it will keep its financial planners, insurance agents and other workers home until at least January in an abundance of caution as the pandemic rages.

Minnesota s philanthropic community is beginning to drum up aid for Texans suffering from power failures and major shortages of drinking water.
In Minneapolis, the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation, started by Best Buy founder Dick Schulze, is helping Best Buy employees in Texas, doling out thousands of dollars in emergency aid starting next week. More than 100 employees have applied so far for the foundation s grants that benefit Best Buy employees in disaster zones.
