Professor Theriault, who is fascinated by congressional decision-making, is currently researching the effect of interpersonal relationships within the U.S. Congress. He has published five books: Congress: The First Branch (with Mickey Edwards; Oxford University Press, 2020), The Great Broadening (with Bryan Jones and Michelle Whyman; University of Chicago Press, 2019), The Gingrich Senators (Oxford University Press, 2013), Party Polarization in Congress (Cambridge University Press, 2008), and The Power of the People (Ohio State University Press, 2005). He has also published numerous articles in a variety of journals on subjects ranging from presidential rhetoric to congressional careers and the Louisiana Purchase to the Pendleton Act of 1883.

When asked why she is passionate about physics, Sonia Paban looks down and takes a long pause. “Physics explains many phenomena using very few concepts. It is the universality. You can explain the motion of the moon with the same equations that you use to explain how a car is moving,” says Paban, associate professor of physics at The University of Texas at Austin.
Paban was recently inducted into UT’s Academy of Distinguished Teachers for her active learning approaches and for encouraging critical thinking.
“I think we all seek to understand the world around us, to make sense of our existence,” she continues. “Throughout history, people have made sense of existence with all sorts of tales or narratives. But to me, explaining natural phenomena using scientific concepts is fulfilling. It has its own intrinsic beauty.”

Julia Guernsey says she doesn’t like to mythologize her past. A true art historian, she is ever aware of how the narrative she might tell shapes reality. When asked about her life growing up, she says simply that she had a happy childhood growing up in Rockford, Illinois, a town west of Chicago. “Nothing much of note or unusual. I’m really not sure what to say about Rockford. … It was the home of Cheap Trick?” she says laughing about the birthplace of the rock band.
Guernsey was the oldest of three children and was encouraged to pick a more practical degree as an undergraduate. She got her bachelor’s degree in business from Marquette University. After graduating, she started working at an art gallery in Milwaukee, where she first learned, from her boss, about art history as a discipline.
