The State Excise Enforcement Squad on Wednesday arrested two persons travelling on a pickup van and seized 150 kg of ganja from them at Aanavathil on the Container Terminal Road.
The arrested men were identified as Nandakumar, 27, of Palakkad, and Kunjumon, 36, of Walayar. They confessed to have smuggled in the ganja for a resident of Mulavukad identified as Boat Antony.
The squad has been keeping a close eye on Malappuram, Palakkad, and Ernakulam districts for the past couple of days following information that drug networks were active after bars and liquor outlets were closed as part of the pandemic-related restrictions.

Excise officials on Thursday arrested a migrant worker allegedly with 18g of brown sugar.
The arrested man was identified as Chalam Sheikh, 33, of West Bengal. He was nabbed from Chalakkal at Aluva. Excise sources said that he was selling the stuff in small lots for ₹500 mostly to migrant workers and youngsters. Around 35 such small packs worth lakhs were allegedly seized from him.
Sheikh had several drug peddling cases against him and had even served jail terms. He had been living with his family at a rented house.
A special squad formed by Deputy Excise Commissioner T. A. Ashokkumar to rein in drug movement during the election season made the arrest. He was produced in court and remanded.

Two months ago, excise sleuths nabbed a 24-year-old from North Paravur with ganja and nitrosun tablets, a prescription drug used mainly to treat insomnia.
It emerged that he has been into drugs from his teens when he used to inject it before gradually shifting to ganja and tablets. Then nearly a week ago, the Excise nabbed his 22-year-old friend and a fellow drug abuser with 53 grams of diazepam, another prescription drug used to treat anxiety. However, he had not yet made the shift and was still jabbing the drug, triggering concerns whether injections, which were considered an outdated mode, were making a comeback, especially in the North Paravur area. Excise sleuths have no idea how the youngsters are getting introduced to the far more dangerous mode of drug abuse.
