Auckland decided on a new tactic after its graffiti removal bill rose to $4.8m, and now aims to remove offensive markings within two hours of a report, and all other graffiti within 24 hours. Since then, there has been a 25 per cent decrease in incidents: from 109,249 in 2013/14 to 81,598 in 2018/19. The approach cuts the vandals’ show time, but also puts pressure on offenders and slows down graffiti hot spots.

Police have not made any further arrests in connection to a New Year s Eve riot that left a Whangamatā cafe with a damaged roof and raided freezers.
A spokesman for Blackies Cafe has described the chaos at the scene on the night, during which hordes of young partiers gathered in the Coromandel town and sparked alcohol and drug-fuelled disorder incidents.
He said the cafe s freezers had been broken into on the night, with $10-15,000 worth of product stolen by out-of-control revellers.
Teens congregated around Blackies Cafe on Thursday night. Ryan said someone would have provided alcohol to many young people out in the town on the night. “We even had a bourbon bottle thrown at the fire appliance, just missed the driver and hit the mirror. “The night before we had a female police constable who was assaulted down Williamson Park, hit in the face. “These people don’t have any respect for anybody and that’s really the situation the courts have to deal with.” Ryan was also a member of the Whangamatā Community Board and believed a large number of those who caused trouble were from out of town.
