Kirkwood s gnome man plans to walk 380 miles to a Type 1 diabetes camp; here s why | Local News

One hundred years ago, everything about Richard Humphreys’ plan would be impossible.  One hundred years ago, a man like 78-year-old Humphreys probably wouldn’t have lived as long as he has.  But a century after insulin was first introduced as a medical treatment, this Kirkwood man who has been living with Type 1 diabetes for 64 years is planning to walk 380 miles, from Pennsylvania to Ohio.  On May 16, Humphreys will strap on his pack with his tent and supplies, pick up his handmade rattlesnake-skin walking stick – a gift from his friend Dale Kirkpatrick – and begin his journey.  He’ll depart his home, which abuts his Gnome Countryside nature trail, a creation that has provided education and inspiration for thousands. His destination is Camp Ho Mita Koda – the world’s oldest operating summer camp for children with Type 1 diabetes – in Newbury Township, Ohio, about 30 miles east of Cleveland.

Bellefonte READS achieves success in spite of COVID | News, Sports, Jobs

CHRIS MORELLI cmorelli@lockhaven.com BELLEFONTE In spite of COVID-19, school closures and snow days, the Bellefonte READS program continues to grow. At Tuesday night’s Bellefonte school board meeting, interim superintendent Tammie Burnaford highlighted the success of the reading program. “We did Bellefonte READS the week before we shut down (in 2020),” Burnaford reminded the board. According to Burnaford, the Pennsylvania State Education Association came to the school last year to do a story about the program. However, due to the closure, the story was never finished. “PSEA came last year, interviewed Jackie Wynkoop and Nicole Kohlhepp for Bellefonte READS … they came and they interviewed and they did all kinds of cool stuff. Then we shut down, so they never got the story written,” Burnaford said.

Clearfield DA Sayers sees interesting first year in office

The new public official also desribed it as “interesting.” “2020 for me like everyone else was an interesting year,” Sayers said. Statistically, Sayers said this was the busiest year for the district attorney’s office in memory. As of Monday, the 1,392 cases were filed in the Clearfield County Court of common pleas, according to the Pennsylvania Unified Justice System website. And Sayers said they will easily top 1,400 cases by the end of the year. Last year there were 1,308 total cases. And not only was his office busy, there were a large number of serious crimes — like murders, rapes, child sex abuse, domestic violence as well as a large number of drug cases, Sayers said
