Teamster drivers and warehouse workers at an Albertsons Cos. grocery distribution center just outside of Phoenix have voted by 98% in support of a strike to protest what the union characterizes as the company’s failure to respond to workers’ COVID-19 safety concerns, in violation of federal labor laws. The approximately 900,000-square-foot facility services about 175 Albertsons, Safeway and Vons grocery stores in Arizona; New Mexico; southern Utah; Las Vegas; and El Paso, Texas.

Grocer says it will work to address drivers and warehouse workers COVID safety concerns
Citing ongoing COVID-19 safety concerns, Teamsters Local 104 members at the Albertsons Cos. Southwest distribution center in Tolleson, Ariz., have authorized a strike.
Phoenix-based Teamsters 104 said late yesterday that 98% of the 700-plus drivers and warehouse workers it represents at the Tolleson facility voted in favor of a strike. The action continues a dispute that early last month saw members hold a protest described by the union as “just practicing picketing” at the 900,000-square-foot DC.
Teamsters 104 claims Albertsons isn’t adhering to coronavirus safety guidelines at the Tolleson facility, including failing to provide drivers with face masks and hand sanitizer and not addressing warehouse workers’ concerns about social distancing.

Jan 6 (Reuters) - Miguel Cabezola, a driver for United Parcel Service Inc in Tucson, Arizona, complained on March 27 to U.S. workplace safety regulators, alleging the company was taking a lax approach to social distancing, sanitizing equipment and quarantining workers with COVID-19 symptoms. He hoped for an inspection of the facility that would force changes to protect worker safety.
Instead, the state arm of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) summarized Cabezola’s concerns in an email to company management, reviewed the UPS response and closed the file.
Over the next two months, a COVID-19 outbreak infected more than 40 Tucson UPS workers - including a manager who eventually died - and caused delivery delays throughout southern Arizona, according to interviews with six Tucson UPS workers and local union officials of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
