The first-ever matchup between Mid-America Christian University and William Penn pitted two top-end teams against each other for the right to travel to Kansas City for the NAIA National Tournament final site. The Evangels, hot on the heels of a 69-63 victory over Holy Cross (Ind.) Friday night, tested the Statesmen all game long. Oskaloosa–The William Penn men’s basketball team will begin its road to a national title by traveling to the Jayhawk State as it earned a berth to the Park City Bracket B as part of the 2020-2021 NAIA Men’s Basketball National Championship Opening Round, presented by Ballogy.
WPU (24-1) is the #1 seed in the three-team bracket in Park, City, Kan. The Statesmen will begin by earning a bye in the event held at Hartman Arena.
Newman Goes Off, Cager Set Season High as WPU Beats Park
Oskaloosa The semifinal matchup in the men’s Heart of America Athletic Conference Tournament was a tale of two halves. The Park Pirates took a lead multiple times over the William Penn Statesmen in the first period, carrying a five-point advantage into the intermission. WPU fortunately bounced back, outscoring the visitors 63-35 in the second half, as Karmari Newman (Sr., Detroit, Mich., Digital Communication) caught fire, leading all players with 35 points, 32 of which came in the second act of the contest. William Penn walked off with a 102-79 victory, improving to 23-1 overall and advancing to next Tuesday’s championship game against the Ravens of Benedictine College.
Big Second Half for Statesmen in Win Over Missouri Valley
Marshall, Mo.–The William Penn men’s basketball team concluded its Heart of America Athletic Conference schedule Wednesday with a sojourn down to Missouri Valley College. The Vikings (8-12, 6-9 Heart) were at the bottom of the standings in the southern half of the conference, but put up quite the fight on home soil. Down one at the half, the Statesmen dominated the second half, outscoring the Vikings 53-31, en route to a 94-73 victory. The team improves its record to 20-1 overall and will conclude regular-season conference play with an 18-1 mark.
