If the horse racing calendar were more like the college basketball schedule in a normal year, it would be like we were about to move into the second half of conference play. Familiar opponents are getting rematches, others are meeting for the first time and serious candidates will emerge for the big dance. Or does 6-year-old Firenze Fire, an 11-time winner in New York, finally score in a graded stakes at Saratoga at a 6-furlong distance that might have been meant for him all along?

SARATOGA SPRINGS The quantity hasn’t been there for the Chad Brown barn so far at the 2021 Saratoga Race Course meet, with just two winners in the first five days of the meet.
At least he got some quality on Friday, with a 1-2 finish, respectively, from Technical Analysis and Fluffy Socks in the Grade III Lake George.
The Mechanicville native has won the Saratoga training title for most victories at the meet three times since 2016, but has been off to a slow start, and also had a five-year winning streak in the Grade I Diana stopped last weekend.

For the third consecutive week, St. George Stable s 5-year-old mare Letruska has been voted No. 1 in the NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll, while Klaravich Stables 4-year-old gelding Domestic Spending has risen to third place.
Letruska, trained by Fausto Gutierrez, has Grade 1 victories in the Apple Blossom Handicap at Oaklawn Park and in the Ogden Phipps at Belmont Park. She also won her most recent race, the Grade 2 Fleur de Lis at Churchill Downs. A daughter of 2010 Grade 1 Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver, Letruska has 13 first-place votes and 280 points.
