Sunday’s massive rally led by heads of two powerful mutts of the subsect showed Yediyurappa no longer enjoyed clout among the Panchamasalis. Though he was all along seen as the undisputed leader of the Lingayats, Karnataka’s largest community, the dominant subsect of Panchamasalis has now distanced itself from the chief minister.
Tens of thousands of Panchamasali Lingayat community members flocked to Bengaluru from all across Karnataka to demand reservation benefits under the more backward classification of 2A, throwing a formidable challenge to chief minister BS Yediyurappa’s leadership.
