A Des Moines-based nonprofit dedicated to helping homeless people survive, find housing and rebuild their lives has completed the first step in establishing a transitional housing community on Des Moines south side.
On July 15, the city s Plan and Zoning Commission approved rezoning land at 1661 County Line Road that would allow Joppa the nonprofit spearheading the project to construct 50 tiny homes and buildings for supportive services.
The project will be up for City Council approval in August, according to Joppa spokesperson Kayla Choate.
Preliminary plans would be to start off with 24 loft cottages. Each cottage is a small, single-resident home complete with a kitchenette and bathroom. Several of the cottages will also be accessible for people with disabilities.
