The City of Prince George tested the Olympic ice surface at the CN Centre last week, expanding the ice for first time since the building was built 10 years ago. The Prince George Blizzard Speedskating Club’s coach Carol Dennison said the transformation will allow the club to host higher calibre events in the future. “More opportunities for our kids to see higher level of competition than we are currently unable to right now at the Coliseum. In turn it gives us an opportunity for kids to set more goals. If they can physically see these skaters, lots of kids are in awe,” said Dennison. “The calibre of skaters will be higher. It will be a great opportunity for Prince George with tourism because a lot of people will come in from out of town.”

Three members of the Prince George Blizzard Speed Skating Club will get their first taste of national competition a week from today at the National Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Ottawa. The trio of Sarah Pousette, Alexis Gaudet and Tim Hempsall qualified at the B.C. Provincial Championship which were held in Kelowna earlier this month. “It went well [at provincials],” said Hempsall. “I got third and the second race I got a DQ and I had to come back from that and in the third race it looked like a tie and we had the same time but the race judges put me in first.”
