BENNINGTON â A man whose body was found in the woods after crashing his truck on Route 279 earlier this month died from the cold, the medical examiner has found.
Hans Heck, 35, died on Jan. 8 from âhypothermia due to low environmental temperatures,â according to the final copy of his death certificate. It says the military veteran died within minutes of exposure, and his death was an accident.
National Weather Service records show that the temperature that day stayed below freezing. It saw a high of 26 degrees at 1:37 a.m. and a low of 15 degrees at 10:46 p.m.

BENNINGTON â A housemate of a man who went missing earlier this month and was later found dead in the woods claims police didnât act quickly enough because of his race.
Jordan Krawczyk told Bennington Select Board members on Monday night that he believes his housemate, Hans Heck, died following negligence by the Bennington Police Department.
âI believe he was racially profiled and they just left him to die,â Krawczyk, a Bennington resident, said in a public comment during Monday nightâs board meeting.
Heck, 35, was a Hispanic American born in Peru, according to a provisional copy of his death certificate. It identified him as a military veteran who served in the Persian Gulf.
The Bennington Police Department is looking for and to check the welfare of Hans Heck who is 35 years old. We believe Heck may have been involved in an incident on VT Rt 279 in Bennington, Vt on Friday at 6:30 pm.
