[Emmanuel Too, Standard] The provisional results showed United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate John Njuguna Wanjiku ahead of Jubilee’s Njama Karanja Kariri by 244 votes. Out of the 152 polling stations reporting, Njuguna had 21,301 votes while Kariri had 21,057 votes. Kariri’s team at the tallying centre alleged votes in the last three polling stations – Gachie, Mucatha and Kawaida – were being tilted in favour of Njuguna. [Standard] Vote-tallying at the Karuri High School centre was suspended Friday morning after chaos erupted following protests over the Kiambaa by-election outcome. The Returning Officer, Peter Muigai, announced the suspension after Jubilee Party candidate Njama Kariuki said he won’t accept the results if a recount of votes from Mucatha, Kawaida and Gachie polling stations was not conducted. Provisional results from 152 polling stations out of the maximum 154 showed United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate, John Njuguna, in the lead with 21,301 votes against Kariri’s 21,057, a difference of 244 votes. ....
The prominent Koinange family was not left out in the contest. Lena Koinange, the daughter of Jomo Kenyatta-era minister Mbiyu Koinange and her niece Damaris Wambui declared their bid for the seat on a Jubilee ticket. Mbiyu Koinange, a Kenyatta right-hand man died in 1981. Lena and Damaris abandoned their bid in favour of Kariri Njama who is now the Jubilee candidate. Njama came second in the 2017 polls. His candidature was viewed by the Jubilee Party as the man to beat UDA candidate John Njuguna Wanjiku who is being viewed as his main rival.
