Delport’s was the eighth first-class hat-trick for Auckland and followed Jamieson’s against Central Stags last October, coming after Jeet Raval had made 91 opening the batting for Northern Districts. Canterbury, meanwhile, took a big step towards winning the Plunket Shield with a 188-run victory over the Otago Volts in the first match to finish on day four. Thanks to three-wicket bags from seamer Matt Henry and spinner Cole McConchie, Canterbury skittled the Volts for 163 in their second innings at Hagley Oval. Anaru Kitchen’s 45 was the top score for the visitors who were always playing catch-up after the hosts racked up 517 batting first.
