Garner, known to regulars as Mr. G, was one half of the husband-wife duo who opened the soul food business on W.W. White Road in July 1990. His wife, Addie Garner, died in September 2017 after battling a lengthy illness. Customers became family inside the small restaurant that was big on love and Southern-style favorites like smothered steaks, okra gumbo and banana pudding, all cooked by the couple.

For the first time, the event has been extended to two weeks long and will come to an end on March 7. BRWSA celebrates the diverse and culturally-rich heritage of Black San Antonio, and features 30 Black-owned restaurants, food trucks and vendors.. Unlike other major Texas cities like Houston or Dallas, San Antonio has a fairly small Black population less than 10 percent, and they often feel like they are an overlooked population in the city. The event helps bring awareness to the Black community and amazing people making an impact on San Antonio.
