First Black president of U.S. college honored with bust Storm Gifford Martin Henry Freeman, who made history as the first African-American president of a U.S. college, has been immortalized in sculpture. Born in 1826, Freeman was just 30 years old when he became president of the all-Black Allegheny Institute and Mission Church in western Pennsylvania, which would later be known as Avery College, reported The Associated Press on Friday. On Friday, Freeman’s birth city of Rutland, Vt., announced that a large marble bust of the scholar was now a permanent attraction on the Rutland Sculpture Trail. “It’s a very soft, gentle portrayal of Martin Freeman,” explained sponsor Al Wakefield. “I don’t know how many people remember either through historical writings what kind of person he was, but he’s depicted as a very gentle, kind, literary, artsy kind of a guy.”
