While the bill won t take effect for 90 days after the end of this year s legislative session, (which could be sometime this month), it s still making waves in the medical community. Attorneys are poring over the legislation to see how abortion providers will have to change their operations. Some doctors are waiting for the seemingly inevitable lawsuit that could stop the bill from becoming active immediately while litigation proceeds in the courts. All of this does not mean, however, that there hasn t been a chilling effect. Some physicians have had to calm anxious staffers at abortion clinics who are afraid about potential criminal liability. ....
Starks and Sarah Familiar are the co-founders of MT Threat, and Diego Galvan of the band A Better Problem is the third member of the collective. All three artists, who are in their early- to mid-20s, came up together in the local music scene, playing in shows together at downtown venues like The Trunk Space and The Pueblo Revival. When shows started getting canceled in 2020 due to the coronavirus, Starks and Familiar created MT Threat as an opportunity not just for themselves, but for other artists in the community. “The main thing for Dylan and me is that we didn’t know how to get started,” says Familiar. “We didn’t know how to get art for albums or get our pictures taken for artist pages. It was really just about creating a place where we could assist musicians.” ....
DOMS, Night Man and Trapper II Back in October, Phoenix garage punk outfit DOMS released Destruct, the first single produced by their recent, full-band approach to songwriting. Last month, the teamwork continued to make the dream work as the band unveiled a new two-single EP, Night Man and Trapper II. Instead of choosing just one song for your consumption, please carve out the full six minutes required for both tracks. That s because they feel like two sides of the same coin: a groovy, slightly hypnotic spin on garage that s as sensuous and sweltering as it is moody and intense. And because the band recorded both tunes live, you get a real sense of where DOMS have landed creatively: somewhere truly weird and wonderful. ....
Arizona Taliban Wants to Criminalize Women and Their Doctors For Abortion Home » Arizona Taliban Wants to Criminalize Women and Their Doctors For Abortion The Advertisement Rep. Walt Blackman, R-Snowflake, had vowed to run such a bill late last summer, calling abortion clinics “death factories” and saying women who terminated pregnancies needed to “spend some time in our Arizona penal system.” At the time, he shrugged off legal protections enshrined in federal law, arguing that Roe v. Wade is only an “opinion” and the U.S. Supreme Court should “honor (Arizona’s) sovereignty.” House Bill 2650 reflects that view, saying county attorneys must pursue criminal prosecutions “regardless of any contrary or conflicting federal laws, regulations, treaties, court decisions or executive orders.” ....
Blackman, a outspoken opponent of abortion from Snowflake who represents Legislative District 6, did not respond to Phoenix New Times request for comment. But he famously spelled out his views in a video published on Facebook on August 25, 2020. If anybody goes into those centers and say they want to end a life and there is no reason to end a life other than the person is spouting, My body my choice, that is murder, he said in the video. If you want to spout, My body my choice, the consequence is you need to spend some time in the Arizona penal system. ....
