HALIFAX The news of more than 180 human remains found in unmarked graves near a residential school close to Cranbrook, B.C., only adds to the complicated mixture of feelings for Canadians this July 1. For those who choose to celebrate, and those who do not, the harsh truth of what happened at Canada’s residential schools means Canada Day may never be the same. Even so, residents at one Bedford condo building - who have been putting out Canadian flags every July 1st for the past several years – are doing the same thing this time around. About forty flags are draped on individual balconies in a show of national pride.

VICTORIA There are no in-person Canada Day celebrations planned for this year due to the pandemic, but that’s not stopping the City of Victoria from planning something for the country’s birthday. The celebrations will consist of community-based performers – reflective of the region s cultural diversity – possibly a headliner act, and recorded content from previous Canada Day celebrations. The City of Victoria is looking for a qualified event organizer to produce the 2021 Virtual Canada Day Celebration, much like last year s event. The city is partnering with Canadian Heritage, and has a budget of $65,000, combining a grant from the federal government of $40,000 and $25,000 in city funds.

The Colpoy’s Bay Women’s Institute, Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation, Saugeen Lawn Bowling Club, and The Bluffs at Huron are sharing over 25 thousand dollars ($25,060) in grant funding from the Ministry of Seniors and Accessibility.
In a news release, the Province says they are investing up to $4.5 million through the Seniors Community Grant Program to support over 180 diverse community projects that will enable older adults to stay connected with their communities from the safety of their home.
The Colpoy’s Bay Women’s Institute is receiving $2,150 for a project that will deliver a series of virtual information sessions to learn and ask questions about COVID-19 and health targeting rural remote seniors which will increase community engagement, reduce social isolation and increase mental health.
