Hawkeyes enter taxing Big Ten season against nemesis Purdue

The fun of being nationally ranked is fine, but the reality of the Big Ten men’s basketball season is something quite different. Illinois took its No. 13 ranking to Rutgers Sunday afternoon and lost, 91-88. Michigan State took its No. 4 label to Northwestern Sunday night and got taken down, 79-65. “Other leagues have good teams,” Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery said Monday, “but every team in our league is really good.” Iowa dropped a spot to No. 4 Monday after its 99-88 loss to Gonzaga Saturday in South Dakota. It’s no time to exhale. The Hawkeyes know all too well that they can’t just show up and mow down unranked Purdue Tuesday night in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Smith-Marsette, Garza and Clark get Big Ten Honors Monday

12/14/20 Three active sports, three Big Ten Players of the Week. A good way to start a Monday for the University of Iowa. Senior wide receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, following the 16 th –ranked Hawkeyes’ 28-7 win against Wisconsin to claim the Heartland Trophy. The announcement was made Monday by the Big Ten Conference office. It is Smith-Marsette’s first career weekly honor and the fourth time a Hawkeye has earned a weekly conference honor this season. The Newark, New Jersey, native caught a season-high seven passes for a career-high 140 receiving yards and two touchdowns on Saturday. It marked his second straight multi-touchdown game, and the yardage was the most since Marvin McNutt had 151 yards at wide receiver against Purdue in 2011.
