Crowd applauds return of parade, normalcy in St. Clair Shores Erica Wilson-Brandon, of St. Clair Shores, waves a flag during the event. Photo by Deb Jacques Photo by Deb Jacques Advertisement ST. CLAIR SHORES Sitting in a lawn chair along Jefferson Avenue, Anna Robinson said she was “100%” ready for normal life to return. This was the first year the Harrison Township resident came to watch the St. Clair Shores Memorial Day Parade after being invited by a friend. “It sort of feels like a return to normalcy,” she said. For others, however, the annual parade is a tradition. “I get to see my friends and my family,” said Mary Beth Ortwein, of St. Clair Shores. “It’s one of the things in this community that everyone can be a part of. It’s well organized.”

1920s REO Flying Cloud on display outside of Manheim marketplace, a hat tip to the area's history

There’s a new addition at the REO Manheim Marketplace: one that relates to both the complex’s history and its name. A 1929 REO Flying Cloud is now on display in a covered outdoor area by Artifice Ales & Mead. The REO Manheim Marketplace, 51 North Main Street, Manheim is located in buildings that had formerly housed Bickel’s Snack Foods, but one of its former lives was also as Manheim’s first auto dealer in 1907. The REO (REO stood for Ransom Eli Olds, the founder of Oldsmobile) dealership was acquired by J. Harvey Spahr and remained in operation into the 1930s.

Geeky Gadgets 12:29 pm A unique Stanley blade knife has been launched by a kick starter in the form of the Kraken Blade by Oceanus Brass, which is already raised over $140,000 thanks to nearly 3,000 backers still 52 days remaining on its campaign. Machined from a block of solid brass the Kraken Blade has been designed to provide a rugged multipurpose knife inspired by the famous ocean monster. The word Kraken is first found in print, tales about this creature seem to date back to Norway in the twelfth century. Such tales refer to a creature so large that it is mistaken for an island or an archipelago.

Letters to the Editor Thursday, Dec. 10 | The Daily Gazette

Letters to the Editor Thursday, Dec. 10 | The Daily Gazette SECTIONS Lots of bridge strikes on Glenridge Road with long traffic delays and no solution in sight. What if clearance bars were installed in each approaching lane far enough back to allow the truck to turn onto either Bruce Drive or Hetcheltown Rodd and a sign on each side of the railroad bridge saying “If you just hit the clearance bar, turn left now! If you strike the bridge, you will be arrested and fined.” Too complicated? Too messy? Kathy Stanley Remembering mom by sharing tradition I was young when Mom taught me how to make the dressing for the turkey, no boxed or bagged mix. We would cut up the bread with our fingers, then cook the sausage with butter, celery and onions, also adding chicken broth and several eggs to the mixture with poultry seasoning
