UK's Digital Badge Pilot Program Resumes This Summer

Pete Comparoni | UK Photo. LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 2, 2021)  The University of Kentucky s Digital Badge pilot program will resume this summer with over 20 badges available. The program gives UK students and non-UK students an opportunity to take courses in a specific area, regardless of their major or current studies, with the ability to earn demonstrated competency in a specific skill or area of expertise. “We are in our second summer of the Digital Badging pilot. Faculty embrace this innovation because it allows us to pull back the veil on our courses and show explicitly the kinds of essential analytical skills our students are developing in their course work,” said Associate Provost of Teaching, Learning and Academic Innovation Kathi Kern. “Employers seek graduates who are critical thinkers, problem solvers, adept communicators and seasoned collaborators. Those very skills are at the heart of how we teach and learn at UK. Digital badges are a way to acknowledge our stu

Making Global Connections: UK Students' Learning Enriched by Virtual International Encounters

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 10, 2021) It’s 3 p.m. in Lexington, and class is in session for the 19 students enrolled in the ANT 536: Global Appalachia course taught by Professor Ann Kingsolver. Meanwhile, it’s 8:30 p.m. across the Atlantic in County Kildare, Ireland, where Chandana Mathur, a professor at Maynooth University, began her own course. A few moments and a few clicks later students in Lexington and in Ireland are connected. Through the innovation of Zoom, a rich exchange ensued around the politics of water. Kingsolver, a professor in the Department of Anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences, regularly intertwines her own courses with various classrooms across different countries, and she is convinced of the tremendous value for students.

'Behind the Blue': Innovations in Teaching During a Pandemic

Thousands of classes and courses sections were moved  in two weeks. In the last year, significant investments have been made in technology to help facilitate a combination of different formats for learning and classes  online and remote, in-person, hybrid and other teaching methods such as synchronous and asynchronous learning. In some ways, the pandemic has hastened a conversation around the different ways  and the best ways  students learn, particularly since our students have grown up with sophisticated technology at their fingertips. To discuss trends in both technology and teaching, Behind the Blue talked with experts on campus who are exploring what’s new in these fields as well as what works best for students and faculty when it comes to learning.

Spotlight: Nicole Martin and Rachael Deel, DEI Project Leads

Dr. Nicole Martin and Dr. Rachael Deel are valued members of the University of Kentucky. They work hard to educate our community on topics surrounding unconscious bias and equity. I recently had the opportunity to learn from them. What were you doing prior to coming to the University of Kentucky and what do you do now? Rachael Deel I earned my Master of Communication degree at the University of North Texas in 2007. I then took a brief hiatus from being a student and accepted an adjunct teaching position at Eastern Kentucky University because I thought Kentucky was a beautiful place, and I have family in the horse business. I quickly realized that I belong in higher education and just couldn’t imagine working anywhere else.
