Fixer-upper: Understanding the DNA repair toolkit to chart cancer evolution

E-Mail IMAGE: Studying the intricacies of DNA repair mechanisms may help us understand cancer evolution better, and even provide us the weapons to fight cancer. view more  Credit: Cancer Biology & Medicine The ongoing fight of science against cancer has made great strides, but cancer cells have not made it easy. The complexity of cancer cells and their adaptive evolutionary nature complicate the search for effective cures. Multiple DNA repair pathways in healthy cells typically work to rectify DNA damages caused by sources within the organism, like spontaneous DNA mutations, or from outside, like ultraviolet radiation. But what happens when these pathways malfunction? It is known that deficiencies in these pathways increase the instability of the genes, and this causes cancer to develop. Therefore, detailed knowledge of how DNA repair pathways participate in this process is crucial for tracking tumor progression, understanding the emergence of drug resistance, and de

Bias Drives Antigun Agenda in Unintentional Children Death Study

Bias Drives Antigun Agenda in Unintentional Children Death Study Ammoland Inc. Posted on IMG iStock-940915470 U.S.A. -(AmmoLand.com)-There is no greater loss than that of a child’s life. Unintentional or accidental death can be even more jarring due to the seemingly preventable nature. Certainly, unintentional childhood death is an especially sensitive topic, but a recent  study led by Dr. Archie Bleyer, M.D., opens the door for discussion. His study calls into question the use of biased sources upon which he draws predetermined conclusions. Dr. Bleyer, a Clinical Research Professor of Radiation Medicine, took an interesting approach to bring this topic to the forefront. The study is highly speculative about firearm ownership as a whole and calls into question the safety steps that firearm owners take at home. Aside from the obvious bias present in the report and relying upon research from a gun control advocacy group,

Planting the Seeds of Hope Campaign Exceeds Fundraising Goal, Raises Half a Million for Behavioral Health Services in Southern Maryland | Southern Maryland News Net

February 9, 2021 The CalvertHealth Foundation is excited to announce the successful completion of the Planting Seeds of Hope Campaign. With a goal to raise $250,000 toward the much-needed behavioral health renovation and expansion project at CalvertHealth Medical Center, 150 supporters and an anonymous matching donation of $250,000 helped raise $506,470 to serve the mental health needs of our community. Recognizing the growing need of mental health services for the community, the renovation of the Frank Miller Howes, MD Behavioral Health Unit at CalvertHealth Medical Center will be complete in spring of 2021. Once opened, the $5.2 million project will allow for expanded inpatient admission criteria for mental health patients in crisis. The new unit will showcase separate, secure therapeutic environments for adults and adolescents allowing CalvertHealth to accommodate more patients and tailor treatment needs specific to age groups.

Firearm deaths increasing in U.S. children younger than 5, study says

E-Mail In a review of national firearm data spanning more than 20 years, researchers at Oregon Health & Science University have identified alarming trends regarding increasing rates of firearm-related deaths among some of America s youngest residents. According to lead researcher Archie Bleyer, M.D., the rate of unintentional firearm deaths in children ages 1 - 4 increased exponentially at an average annual percent of 4.9 between 1999 and 2018, with the greatest impact among non-Hispanic Black and White children. This rate is more than eight times higher than any other highly developed country worldwide. What is perhaps most distressing about these findings, is that nearly 90% of these instances took place in or near the victims home, and 100% of the events were preventable, says Bleyer, a clinical research professor in the Department of Radiation Medicine, OHSU Knight Cancer Institute, OHSU School of Medicine.
