Art in Action: Young Artists’ Vision of 2020
The Mandell Jewish Community Center, in collaboration with the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, will showcase “Art in Action: Young Artists’ Vision of 2020,” a collection of creative work that captured the thoughts and emotions of teens from across the Greater Hartford region during the Covid-19 crisis. During the fall of 2020, more than three dozen Greater Hartford artists, ages 13-19, submitted to the Hartford Foundation a variety of creative projects which reflected their energy and emotions during the pandemic. UJA-JCC Greenwich donates 100 Dignity Grows packs to local food pantry
GREENWICH – During the month of May, UJA-JCC Greenwich gave the local food pantry ‘Neighbor to Neighbor’ 100 totes filled with essential hygiene supplies. The do-nation was made as part of the organization’s Dignity Grows program, which provides monthly personal and feminine products to those who cannot afford such products.
It is estimated that one in five American women lack the means to purchase menstrual supplies and toiletries. While such products are often taken for granted, for those who must go without the upshot can mean missed days of school or work and and an ac-companying sense of shame and loss of income. Government benefits such as SNAP don’t cover menstrual products and toiletries.
Simsbury Meadows summer lineup opening with benefit concert hosted by new restaurant Susan Dunne, Hartford Courant
The Simsbury Meadows Performing Arts Center will hold its first live musical concert of the year on May 28, with a performance by the Fabulous Equinox Orchestra. The show is sponsored by Roux, a Cajun eatery opening on May 29 in town.
The Savannah, Georgia-based Big Band also will perform the next day at the jazz brunch on the opening of the restaurant, which is under construction at 10 Wilcox St. They also will perform in a parade at the restaurant’s ribbon cutting.
Other live performances scheduled at Simsbury Meadows, at 22 Iron Horse Boulevard, include a Memorial Day concert on May 31; Hartford Symphony Orchestra’s Talcott Mountain Music Festival on all five Fridays in July; a comedy series on the first three Wednesdays in July; a Connecticut musicians’ showcase the first three Wednesdays in August; performances by the U.S. Coast Guard Band
